  case study
John was a member of a CD/DVD Club. Every month the club would send John a new CD or DVD and he would pay via a Direct Debit which went out of his current account at the beginning of each month. However he decided to cancel this. He arranged alternative payments with the Club and wrote to his bank informing them that he wished to cancel the DD. However the next month he noticed that the Direct Debit had gone out of his account again. This had also caused him to go overdrawn and incur bank charges. On the Citizen Advice Bureau's advice John spoke to his bank manager and was informed that as he had cancelled the direct debit in writing as requested, the bank was in fact at fault. They refunded both the Direct Debit and overdraft charges.
