Anyone who lives on their own will have to pay bills for services provided to the house or flat. These bills are likely to include payments to various companies, including gas and electricity, also telephone and Council Tax bills, not to mention credit card bills which will arrive as well!
The bills will be different, but essentially they will all have the same information. Have a look at the example of a utility bill on the next page.
The essential information you need to look at and carefully check is:

Your personal details Normally your name and address. Check the bill really belongs to you.
How much you owe This is normally the basic amount you owe, but may not include VAT
Amount of VAT The value added tax amount to be added
Total amount you owe The total, including VAT – this is the total amount you will have to pay
How to pay This may be on the back of the bill and will normally give you a number of options
Payment date Normally the bill will indicate when the money must be paid by
