benefits
do I know...
what is meant by ‘benefits’?
what benefits are available to me?
how to claim benefits available to me?
where to get help about benefits?
what to do if I am not claiming any benefits available to me?
how to find out about benefits that may be available to me in the future?
  case study
Jane and her partner, Michael, went to CAB as they had several benefit enquiries. She has a 3 year-old daughter and was currently living in B&B accommodation. He was living with his mother in a tiny bungalow. She's waiting to get a council house where they can all live together and wanted to know what benefits they're entitled to.

The CAB couldn't tell them whether they could get Housing Benefit or council tax benefit until they have a property. However they advised her to fill in a pre-tenancy determination form, and take it to her council who would be able to tell her how much housing benefit etc. she would be entitled to. They suggested she ask about Income Support, Child Benefit and Working Tax Credit as well.

Mr G wanted to find out what his new benefit entitlements would be as he'd just got a job. He'd previously been unemployed, and had received Income Support, Housing Benefit and Council Tax Benefit. His new job would pay £12,250 p.a. Also his partner was going to be moving in and paying rent-she earned £9,000 p.a. Although not entitled to any benefits the CAB advised him to check with the Inland Revenue whether they were eligible for Working Tax Credit.
