how much do I have to pay?

The rates vary from time to time and are normally set by the Chancellor of the Exchequer at Budget time. As an example, the following rates apply to employed workers in 2010/11:

There are different rules for self-employed people. If you are self-employed you will pay a basic amount per week or month, together with an annual payment based on the profits from your business. See current tax tables for details. |

how is national insurance paid

If you are employed it will automatically be deducted from your wages. You will not have to do anything. |

If you are self-employed, you will have to arrange to pay the Inland Revenue on a monthly basis, together with an annual lump sum based on your profits. |
